Seamless pipe as the name suggests is a pipe without a seam or a weld-joint in contrast to Seam or Welded pipe. In a Seam or Welded pipe, the seam or the weld-joint is the weaker part of the pipe limiting the strength of the pipe to the strength of the weld-joint. Whereas the seamless pipe does not have any such joint and thus has uniform structure & strength all over the pipe body. Thus the seamless pipe can withstand higher pressure, higher temperature, higher mechanical stress & corrosive atmosphere and find wide applications in Oil & Gas, Refinery, Petrochemical, Chemical, Fertilizer, Power, Automotive, Bearing, Mechanical & Structural applications
a. Hot Finished Pipes & Tubes
Hot Finished Seamless (HFS) as differentiated from Cold Drawn Seamless (CDS) pipes and tubes are made by heating a solid billet or bloom and then punching or piercing it to make a hollow out of it. This hollow is subsequently passed through one or multiple stands with or without a tool inside to give it the final pipe or tube dimensions.
It is possible to manufacture large diameter and thick pipes of various grades in high volume through the HFS process. With the improvement in technology, HFS pipes & tubes now come with close dimensional tolerance & good surface finish.
b. Cold Pilgered / Cold Drawn Tubes
Cold Drawn Seamless (CDS) as implied is made by cold drawing a larger mother seamless pipe, which is generally manufactured through a HFS process. In the CDS process, the mother pipe is pulled through a die & plug in cold without any heating. Because of the tool on outside and inside the surface and tolerances are better in CDS. While this is an additional process over HFS, it is necessary to get smaller size pipes which otherwise cannot be manufactured in HFS. Some applications which require close tolerances and smooth surfaces also specify the requirements to be necessarily CDS. CDS pipes & tubes are extensively used in Heat-Exchanger, Bearing & Automotive sectors.
c. Boiler Tubes
Boiler has played an important role in the modern world from the early days of industrial revolution. Now-a-days boilers are widely used by Utility, Industrial, Commercial & Institutional sectors for heating and power generation. With the ever increasing demand for power, the requirements of utility boilers have gone up manifold in recent years. Tubes & pipes form the major part of any boiler in various applications like economizer, super-heater & headers. Size, grade, quantity of tubes & pipes depend on the design of the boiler which is based on fuel, temperature, pressure & volume of steam-flow. There is also continuous efforts to increase the efficiency of the boiler. With the demand for high capacity & high efficiency boilers, the demand for higher grade tubes & pipes have increased substantially.
d. API Line Pipes
Line pipes are most common type of pipes which are used to transfer liquid & gaseous products like Oil, Gas, Petro-products, Chemicals, etc. But nonetheless they are no less critical as they serve as important link carrying mostly valuable, inflammable, corrosive products. Pipelines often pass through severe environmental conditions & have to withstand weather variations. Very often pipelines extend for thousands of kilometers and sometimes lie under the sea. Size, grade, quantity of pipes depend on the design of the pipeline which is based on product, pressure, volume & environment. With the increase in need to reduce the maintenance and increase the life of the pipeline, the demand for higher grade & better quality pipes is ever increasing.
